Bible Verses for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a meaningful day for moms, and a wonderful day for everyone to express appreciation and gratitude for them.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (New Living Translation)
When it comes to the Bible’s most well-known passage on love, mothers are beautiful examples of the high calling of love that is described.

Psalms 128:1-2, 5-6

How blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, Who walks in His ways. When you shall eat of the fruit of your hands, You will be happy and it will be well with you. The Lord bless you from Zion, And may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. Indeed, may you see your children’s children. Peace be upon Israel! – Psalm 128:1-2, 5-6 (New American Standard Bible)
This passage speaks to the joy and happiness of families who fear God and walk with him — eventually experiencing the blessing of grandchildren

Proverbs 31:25-31

Bold power and glorious majesty are wrapped around her as she laughs with joy over the latter days. Her teachings are filled with wisdom and kindness, as loving instruction pours from her lips. She watches over the ways of her household and meets every need they have. Her sons and daughters arise in one accord to extol her virtues, and her husband arises to speak of her in glowing terms. “There are many valiant and noble ones, but you have ascended above them all!”  Charm can be misleading, and beauty is vain and so quickly fades, but the virtuous woman lives in wonder, awe, and fear of the Lord. She will be praised throughout eternity. So go ahead and give her the credit that is due, for she has become a radiant woman, and all her living works of righteousness deserve to be admired at the gateways of every city! – Proverbs 31:25-31 (The Passion Translation)
This classic passage on the “virtuous woman,” provides a beautiful picture of a mother who experiences the joy of her children and husband.

Ephesians 6:1-3

Children, if you want to be wise, listen to your parents and do what they tell you, and the Lord will help you. For the commandment, “Honor your father and your mother,” was the first of the Ten Commandments with a promise attached: “You will prosper and live a long, full life if you honor your parents.” Ephesians 6:1-3 (The Passion Translation)
In this well-known passage, children are exhorted to the task of honor. All of us — whether we are children or are raising them — should remember to give honor to mothers.

Exodus 20:12

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.  – Exodus 20:12 (New King James Version)
Along with reverence, we are to honor mothers. Whatever our age, whatever our place in life, our mothers always deserve our honor

Leviticus 19:3

Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. – Leviticus 19:3 (New King James Version)
God gives us mothers as a gift, and he commands that we revere them, just as we are careful to obey all of God’s commandments.

Luke 1:5-6

In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. – Luke 1:5-6 (New International Version)
An often-overlooked passage in Luke provides the picture of a godly woman. She had no children of her own, but she looked forward to seeing the child Jesus.

Luke 1:46-48

And Mary sang this song: “My soul is ecstatic, overflowing with praises to God! My spirit bursts with joy over my life-giving God! For he set his tender gaze upon me, his lowly servant girl. And from here on, everyone will know that I have been favored and blessed. – Luke 1:46-48 (The Passion Translation)
Mary, perhaps the most well-known mother in the Bible, made this statement when she learned that God had chosen her to bear the Christ child.

Philippians 4:8

So keep your thoughts continually fixed on all that is authentic and real, honorable and admirable, beautiful and respectful, pure and holy, merciful and kind. And fasten your thoughts on every glorious work of God, praising him always. – Philippians 4:8 (The Passion Translation)
Moms are a source of honor, goodness, and loveliness. As in all things pure and virtuous, we are encouraged to think upon such things.

Ruth 1:16-17

Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.  Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!” – Ruth 1:16-17 (New Living Translation)
Ruth, though a foreigner recently bereaved from her husband, declared her undying love for her mother.

2 Timothy 1:5

I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you. – 2 Timothy 1:5 (New Living Translation)
Scripture provides us with this picture of a mother and grandmother who were faithful in both their belief and teaching their children. Their faith was well-known to Paul, as he instructed his protege, Timothy.
