Just Another Altar Call

There’s a small crowd gathered in the church yard.
It’s just another Sunday, like so many times before.
There’s lots of socializing as folks enter thru the doors.
Preparing for the service like a thousand times before.

They’ll do a little singing and they’ll go to God in prayer.
Then the Pastor reads the scripture with everyone to share.
He’ll give them God’s message and pray for ears to hear.
Then he’ll call for decisions with a hopeful voice so clear.

Just another Sunday service, just another altar call.
Just one more invitation, pleading come one and all.
People standing in the pews, singing “Just As I Am.”
As the Pastor stands in waiting, just another altar call.

Than a hand begins to tremble and a book begins to close.
Someone steps into the aisle as the music plays real slow.
As she kneels before God, her tears begin to flow.
She gives her life to Jesus and He purifies her soul.

It’s been many years since I walked down that aisle.
I’ll always remember my Pastor’s big smile.
I thank God for the churches and for every altar call.
For when you leave the altar, you never leave alone.

Just another altar call, was all it was to most.
Just another service ending, coming to a close.
But God spoke to me that day and I realized I was lost.
It was during that altar call, I met Jesus at the cross.

(There are many churches today that no longer hold altar calls. I wonder how many opportunities are being missed.)
